Treadmill VS. Outdoor Running

When it comes to running (and walking), you have two types of people: those who adore the outdoors and those who love a treadmill no matter how beautiful it is outside. But which is better? Is there really a big difference between the treadmill and the sidewalk? Which offers a higher calorie burn? What are the pros and cons of both?

Did you know that you run 27% slower on a treadmill then you do outside? That is a HUGE number. The reason being that a stationary background makes you think you’re moving faster than you actually are. A number of studies show that in general outdoor running tends to promote a more intense exercise and burns about 5% more calories than treadmills do due to wind resistance and no assistance from a treadmill belt.

With warm weather finally arriving in Chicago (kind of), it’s time to get outside to run faster, rev up your metabolism, and burn more calories! Check out this workout my hubby and I love to do at the local track now that weather is warming up!
