“Fitt” Friday from TheFittChick…

Have you ever tried getting up first thing in the morning and getting in your workout? Fasted cardio is becoming increasingly more popular, especially for those that are trying to maximize their fat loss. Fasted cardio simply means doing your cardio workout in the morning, on an empty stomach.

The basic idea of fasted cardio is that your body will be more likely to use its own fat stores for fuel instead of the food you just ate. “Food (especially carbohydrates) causes a sudden release of insulin that interferes with the mobilization of body fat. The less insulin present during the fasted workout means that more fat will be burned as energy.”

Another benefit of fasted cardio is that after your workout, your metabolism stays elevated for hours after your done exercising. This means you’ll burn more calories even when you are at rest.

Like all things fitness, use your best judgement when it comes to fasted cardio. I believe the benefits speak for themselves, and I try to fit it in to my workout routine two times a week. Many of my clients feel great working out on an empty stomach, while others believe they have to have some food before they attempt any exercise. Whatever your choice may be, as long as your active you will see results. Fasted cardio just may be a quicker way to get where your hoping to go.
